IGOU meeting 2013 Pölzig

Erik - IGOU  Bester Bock aller Farben Pölzig 2013
Overall winner all rams with his Breeder / Owner E Hübner

Thanks to some great photos once again it has been possible to share in this years IGOU show. Sheep at this years show would  not look out of place  at the national show here in France but as these photos demonstrate the breed has clearly made  a comfortable transition to Germany and German breeding. Great stuff.

Some of the rams entered in the two year old black rams category.
The traditional colour black predominates and the overall standard is clearly high.

Black yearling  ewes and hat competition;-)

A selection of brown ewes getting the judgely laying on of hands. There is something to be said for individual presentation of the sheep. It does make it easier to compare the sheep especially across a group.

Emile and Lavall

These two rams are close to being celebrities. Originally purchased by IGOU on behalf of the breed club members from France. They have been made available to club members, indeed  the ram Erik  Overall winner all rams  this year was sired by Emile.

Moments.........from the GEMO Show

I wanted to try to pick a selection of photos that brought together a more intimate perspective of the show. The camera is ideal for capturing a look or a feel, so here is a different kind of focus.

Eyeing up the competition

It has been hard to sort the photos this year, truly I have been spoilt for choice and even though the day was not the best for photography for several reasons looking through the photos of the day, I have been pleasantly surprised at how many are quite serviceable. This head study of a black ram just leapt off the page at me.  Beautiful!!

Judgely decisions were not always easy

and opinions were sometimes split

but everyone was checking out the competition.........

There was little to complain about on any count.  More soon.....

GEMO Concours National 2013

Vaillant Ewes
This year the National Competition for Ouessant sheep took place at Brécé - Ile et Vilaine. Not too far from home. It was good to see the return of Patrice Royer's sheep to the competition  after three years absence.  It was also good to see some of the newer breeders return once again, surely bitten by the bug. There was a high standard overall and a good entry of over 100 sheep. A significant change this year is the option to bring sheep who aren't entered for the competition but who can still be examined for a certificate of conformity to the standard.
With limited places available and a high standard of sheep in general it can be hard to provide encouragement to newer breeders and reassure them of the standard of their sheep if they are not in the select group of prize winners. The certificates of conformity provide not just breeders but prospective purchasers with the assurance that they are buying sheep that can be considered of the breed.

I chose only two sheep to take this year both home bred, one for the competition and one for a certificate of conformity. Lets just say I wasn't disappointed on either score. I'll post a selection of photos from the day in due course. For now just a couple of candid shots.

GEMO National Competition Rennes 2012 - The Event

The accommodation was five star, the welcome warm and the weather was perfect. It promised to be a good day.

 La paperasserie - paperwork first

Then it was time to get eye to eye with the sheep. These rams from the Parc d'Armorique arrived the night before the show.

 Judgely Huddles....... Serious Stuff!

Pretty Girls.......

 Handsome Guys....

and Gorgeous Groups

This year was the year of the prizewinners photo shoot......... some were considerably more au fait in front of the camera than others!

See what I mean,

This black ram belonging to E Landerneau was awarded champion of champions (rams) he posed for the camera like a professional! Thanks to everyone for a great day but especially the Ecomusée for being such excellent hosts.

Judging Ouessants Dutch Style

The opportunity to visit Holland for a second time and enjoy not only the hospitality but to add in a little sheep viewing was too good to turn down. The presentation of Ouessants at Didam was  hosted by the  "Fokkersvereniging Ouessantschapen" or FOS which is a lot easier for me to say! There was a nice entry, general observations where that black and brown Ouessants were well represented with only two whites  entered.

As is customary in Holland all the adult sheep were both measured and weighed.

Scales

La toise - height

For me one notable aspect was how relaxed it all was , the use of one handler per sheep and the recent addition of camping chairs was deluxe in comparison to some of the frenetic dashes and chaotic melees  for judging  I have seen and made the whole affair much easier to follow and of course less stressful on all participants.

There was plenty of time to sit and chat, enjoy the ambiance and the sheep of course. More of those in another post.

GEMO Concours National 2012

This year the Ecomusée du Pays de Rennes will host the annual national competition. It will be on Sunday the 16th of September and will be incorporated as part of a presentation "La journée du patrimoine" a fitting place and event for the Mouton d'Ouessant. The Ecomusée has a wide range of exhibits to see in additon to the Ouessants and this year there will be an added event ' Une Foire aux Béliers" whilst this will be an opportunity for GEMO members to place some juvenile rams it should be quite a spectacle in itself. There will be the opportunity for breeders to obtain certificats of conformité as well, I am very much looking forward to the event.
Put the date in your diary now. 16.09.2012

Getting the format right with Blogger seems an impossiblity!

The Ouessant Sheep originates from the island of Ouessant, part of a tiny archipelago just off the north coast of Finistere, Brittany. The island of terror as it was known to some, was swept by the full force of the atlantic’s weather, the hardy sheep adapted to survive on poor grazing from salty clifftop meadows. It was the women of the island that raised the sheep, renowned for their black wool to weave into cloth known locally as berlinge and their meat with its sweet and delicate taste.
